University of York

The University of York has several unique conference venues. Established in 1963, the university is home to world-leading research and teaching with more than 15,000 students. Located at the university's main Heslington campus is Central Hall, a landmark venue with a distinctive half-octagonal design. The concert hall is available for various events, including conventions, conferences and musical performances. Central Hall's greeting area is suitable for receptions and networking events, while a spacious auditorium can be configured for different uses including tradeshow floors. The venue can accommodate up to 1,190 people and overlooks the campus's lake. It is also a short walk to the university's conference accommodation sites.

King's Manor in the city centre is available for conferences, meetings and other events. Room capacities vary from 2 to 90 people, while catering is provided by the on-site Refectory Café. Dating back to the fifteenth century, the historic Grade I listed property was built for the abbots of St Mark's Abbey in York. The University of York's Exhibition Centre is a modern space with flexible meeting areas that can fit up to 40 exhibition stands. With 900 square metres of floor space and easily dividable rooms, the venue is ideally suited for exhibitions and networking events. It also boasts tiered lecture theatres and break out spaces. Central Hall, King's Manor, the Exhibition Centre and a number of smaller venues at the university are managed by York Conferences. Hotel Conference Centres

A number of hotels and resorts in York operate conference venues for events of various sizes. Situated 10 miles north of York is the Best Western Burn Hall Hotel. A former Victorian manor house, the redbrick Burn Hall has been refurbished to provide meeting spaces for up to 200 people. The hotel also has 94 rooms, two bars, a restaurant, and an on-site team building venues at the York Bird of Prey Centre and GTS Adventure, which arranges outdoor activities such as shooting, wall climbing, archery, canoeing and kayaking. There are also 8 acres of gardens and a bond.

In the city centre, the Park Inn by Radisson has purpose-built meeting centre with 13 meeting rooms spanning two conference rooms. With many rooms overlooking the Ouse River, there is space for up to 400 delegates and amenities such as modern audio-visual equipment, on-site parking and free wireless high-speed internet. Also in the city centre close to the railway station is the Royal York Hotel and Conference Centre. Built in 1898, the 155-room hotel has 15 flexible meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 410 people. York Barbican Centre

Other conference centres in the city include the York Barbican Centre. Completed in 1989, the entertainment venue hosts concerts, shows, snooker competitions, and a diverse range of other events. A recent £1.5 million refurbishment has added new conference and event spaces. With breakout spaces and foyer areas for networking, the centre's auditorium is well suited for large conference of up to 1,500 people. The auditorium can also accommodate up to 400 seated guests. A number of smaller rooms are also available for seminars, workshops, meetings and other smaller events.

York Racecourse

The York Racecourse also provides conference facilities within two grandstands. Host of three Group One races - the Juddmonte International Stakes, the Nunthorpe Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks, the horse racing venue is the third largest racecourse in Britain in terms of prize money. Racing dates back to Roman times in York and racing at the York Racecourse site has been organised since Neolithic times. With more than 2,000 square metres of exhibition space, the York Racecourse provides a range of flexible spaces for conferences as well as meetings, launches and other events. The venue also offers free on-site parking and easy road access just south of the city centre. Rooms at the York Racecourse can also accommodate up to 650 seated guests.

Lakeside Conference Centre

The National Agri-Food Innovation Campus at Sand Hutton, York is home to the Lakeside Conference Centre. The life sciences campus is home to private and public sector science-based organisations, which have access to one-site science accommodation and support services. Overlooking a picturesque lake, the dedicated conference facility features a 250-seat conference room and flexible meeting rooms. Set in a 32-hectare wooded countryside, the venue provides full audio-visual support as well as an IT training suite and full catering services. The mezzanine is an excellent option for exhibitions and breakout areas, while a balcony overlooking the lake can also be used for events. The conference centre is 8 miles from York's railway station and includes a large car park.
